The transformation of Hoxton and Shoreditch over the last two decades is widely seen as a clear example of the creation of a new urban ‘cultural quarter’. The area has frequently featured in policy reports and academic research considering culture-led urban regeneration, and has been the focus for several place-specific artistic interventions. Yet what lessons can we learn from Hoxton and Shoreditch’s transformation about the recent dynamics of urban cultural economies, particularly in inner-city locations? How best can a range of organisations and people help shape the trajectories of the area’s redevelopment, especially around issues of displacement? And what is the future for the Hoxton model in a new era of austerity?
